Rembrandt's 'Young Lion Resting' Sells for a Record Breaking $18 Million at Sotheby's

Masters Week auctions got off to a roaring start with a new record for a Rembrandt drawing. The rare ‘Young Lion Resting’ reached a historic $18 million at Sotheby's New York today. Proceeds will benefit Panthera to support wild cat conservation.

This small but powerful drawing depicts nature in its most essential state of beauty. With only a few brushstrokes and lines of chalk, Rembrandt captures not just the lion’s figure, but offers a glimpse into its soul.

‘Young Lion Resting’ was the highlight of Master Works on Paper from Five Centuries sale, which totaled $19.8 million. Masters Week continues on 5–6 February in the Breuer at 945 Madison Ave.
