When you think of what goes well with chikuwa, shiso leaves come to mind—
or is that just me?
We stuff whole shiso leaves inside and quickly pan-fry them.
They’re ready in about 10 minutes, stay delicious even when cooled, and are great for bento lunches.
They also pair really well with beer!

Ingredients
Chikuwa (fish cake tubes) — 3
Shiso (perilla) leaves — 9
Tempura batter mix
Sea salt
Cooking oil for frying
Instructions
Cut the chikuwa and stuff them with shiso leaves.
Dissolve the tempura batter mix in cold water, add salt, and lightly mix.
Pour a small amount of oil into a frying pan and heat over medium.
Coat the chikuwa with batter and fry for about 2 minutes until done ♪
