From Venezuela to Syria, China’s authoritarian friends have lost power one after another.

Last May, Chinese leader Xi Jinping met with Maduro in Moscow, saying both sides have forged an iron-clad friendship. Maduro’s life was upended seven months later. Now he's in U.S. custody and faces narco-terrorism charges.

Along similar lines, Nepal's former prime minister, Sharma Oli, met with China's Xi last August. Xi said China stood ready to work with Nepal to take their partnership to a new height.

A month later, Oli was forced to resign.

Protests led by young Generation Z activists broke out nationwide against his decision to ban access to several media platforms.

A former chief justice is serving as the interim prime minister.
