El Cóndor Pasa was composed in 1913 by Peruvian ethnomusicologist Daniel Alomía Robles as part of a zarazuela. It is based on traditional Andean music and was first performed publicly at the Teatro Mazzi in Lima.

The song was further popularised in 1970 when it was covered by Simon & Garfunkel (featuring English lyrics by Paul Simon).
