The Sad End of Socrates

Socrates is, without a doubt, the greatest name in Ancient Greece. His ideas remain alive to this day, even though his death occurred more than 2,000 years ago. These same ideas that have liberated the minds of billions of people throughout history are what led to Socrates' imprisonment and death sentence. Little is known about what happened inside the cells of that prison, but what we do know is that, shortly before dying, Socrates uttered one of his most beautiful phrases:

“The time has come to depart: I to death, you to life.”

Socrates knew his influence on the minds of young people and knew the power his death carried. And all this can be easily seen in Jacques-Louis David's painting.
