What Was Happening in Rome? Unimaginable Scandals and Secrets of the Ancient Civilization
Today we explore the lesser-known secrets of ancient Rome, a civilization famous for its greatness, but also for its surprising and brutal customs. Although it is known for its architecture, art, and great emperors, Roman daily life was marked by excess, abuse, and brutality that few know about. From the life of slaves to the extravagances of the emperors, Rome was full of contrasts.
Slaves, who made up between one-third and three-fifths of the population, not only worked in households but were also crucial to agriculture, mines, and even the banquets of the nobles. The myth of the Sabine women, kidnapped to ensure the continuity of Rome, reflects the brutality of its early days.
Roman emperors, like Tiberius and Caligula, lived in decadence, hosting parties of excess where they indulged in the darkest pleasures. Punishments in Rome were equally severe: from crucifixions to macabre execution methods, such as the fate of the Vestal Virgins who broke their vow of chastity.
Roman hygiene was also peculiar. Instead of soap, they used urine to clean their togas, and Roman medicine, though advanced in some aspects, resorted to strange remedies, such as using manure to cure diseases.
Roman life shows us that, while a civilization can achieve great accomplishments, it can also be marked by extravagance and cruelty. What do you think of these Roman customs?
