This beautiful Christmas carol was first performed on December 24, 1818, in the Roman Catholic Church of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf near Salzburg, on the site of which the Silent Night Chapel now stands, with a melody by Franz Xaver Gruber and lyrics by Joseph Mohr.
