Elon Musk Just Exposed What NASA LIED about SpaceX's Starship Moon Landing.
So here’s the question everyone’s asking right now:
Do we really need to beat China back to the Moon, no matter the cost?
That’s the heated debate lighting up the space community after former Nasa Administrator Mike Griffin threw some serious shade at Nasa's current Artemis program.
During a very lively hearing in Washington on December 4th, Griffin didn’t hold back. He basically said Nasa's entire Artemis plan—the whole “sustainable, reusable lunar lander fueled in space” dream—is destined to fail.
His exact words? “It cannot work.”
And he’s not talking about minor issues here. Griffin believes the architecture’s dependence on unproven in-orbit refueling and a swarm of fueling launches in low-Earth orbit—possibly dozens—is just asking for disaster.
So what’s Griffin’s solution? Scrap Artemis as it stands—starting with Artemis 3—and go back to basics.
He wants the national space agency to reboot with a simpler, Apollo-style setup, but using today’s biggest rockets: the SLS Block 2.

Here’s how his vision works:
Launch 1 (Cargo): SLS Block 2 blasts a fully fueled lunar lander plus transfer stage directly to low lunar orbit (equatorial site). Launch 2 (Crewed): SLS Block 2 sends the Orion capsule with crew and another transfer stage to rendezvous in low lunar orbit. Crew Transfer: Astronauts spacewalk from Orion to the waiting lander. Then, those astronauts pilot the waiting lunar lander from Moon orbit straight down to land on the lunar surface near the equator, because those spots are simpler to reach and safer.
It’s a neat, clean, no-nonsense plan.
No orbiting fuel depots. No Starship gas-ups. No complicated South Pole operations. And if anything goes wrong, the crew can abort back to Earth quickly using proven Boeing and Lockheed systems.
Sound familiar? It should. Griffin has been pitching versions of this concept for years. In fact, it’s pretty much a rehash of his early 2000s “Apollo on Steroids” idea—simplified, direct, and laser-focused on getting there safely.
But almost as soon as Griffin’s plan hit the airwaves, the space community fired back—and hard.

And honestly, it’s not difficult to see why.
Space fans and industry insiders say his “back-to-Apollo” reboot isn’t any better than what SpaceX or Blue Origin are already doing. It’s not cheaper, not faster, and definitely not easier.
For one thing, the SLS production line is crawling. One rocket per year is considered “good progress,” and that’s with enormous funding. The upgraded Block 2 variant? It doesn’t even exist yet, and neither does the dedicated launch pad it would need.
Building enough to support Griffin’s two-rocket-per-mission plan would mean new factories, new facilities, and years of delays—at places like Michoud, which is already packed to capacity.
