Modern Courtyard House in Australia | Eco-Friendly Family Home Design
Located in the suburb of Mount Waverley, Melbourne, Mahogany House is a thoughtfully designed multigenerational family home by R ARCHITECTURE, responding directly to both family needs and the natural elements of the site. Designed around a mature mahogany tree at the rear of the property, the house embraces landscape, sustainability, and spatial efficiency in a refined suburban setting.
The planning carefully preserves the root systems of three significant trees — a liquid amber and silver birch at the front, and the defining mahogany tree at the rear. The entire layout is oriented toward a north-facing central courtyard, with the mahogany tree becoming the visual and spatial axis of the home.
The house is composed of two distinct volumes separated by the courtyard and swimming pool. The main double-storey dwelling sits to the west, while a single-storey residence for the grandparents is positioned to the east. These volumes are connected through an entry lounge that frames a calm view across the courtyard and pool. The grandparents’ residence includes a private lounge with kitchenette, two bedrooms, and a bathroom—allowing independence while maintaining close family connection.
A defining feature of Mahogany House is its creative use of locally manufactured terracotta shingles, traditionally used for roofing but here applied to both the roof and exterior wall cladding. This distinctive material strategy establishes a strong visual dialogue with the surrounding foliage and grounds the architecture within its natural context.
Inside, the home expresses warmth and playfulness through a rich interior colour palette, blending warm green plywood joinery with bold blue walls and carefully placed colourful accents. Curved architectural elements and continuous greenery enhance the sense of well-being while strengthening the home’s indoor-outdoor relationships.
From a sustainability perspective, Mahogany House is designed using Passivhaus principles and Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) to ensure airtight construction, high energy performance, and long-term environmental responsibility. The project prioritises right-sizing over excess, proving that sustainable suburban living can be both efficient and architecturally expressive.
Mahogany House stands as a modest yet powerful example of how eco-conscious design, multigenerational living, and thoughtful budget planning can converge into a meaningful and inspiring modern Australian home.
