Realizing Durante's First Partimento (HTRWP Part 2)
In this session of How to Realize and Write a Partimento (Part 2), we'll start with a simple motif based on a 4-3 suspension and embellish it with sixteenth notes.
Focus on how I navigate every intervallic relationship, such as lowering the F# to an F.
Later in the realization, I switch tactics to create more dissonance and melody:
1. Using 7-6 suspensions to create a higher melodic figure.
2. Embellishing parallel 6/3 chords with sixteenth note runs.
3. The "Bach" Trick: At 3:50, I explain how a melodic figure, often used by J.S. Bach (like in BWV 775), is used in a deceptive way to trick the listener's ear into hearing E Minor, before quickly pulling them back into G Major.
A question: Did you spot the modulation trick before I explained it? Let me know in the comments.
This is a series for composition and music theory students, and anyone who's interested in the innate beauty of Classical music.
