The very first thing the Polaris Dawn crew noticed about SpaceX’s brand-new EVA suit wasn’t the view, or even the thrill of floating in space. It was the cold. And not just a little chill—Jared Isaacman and his team were shivering uncontrollably inside those futuristic suits.
So what was going on? The culprit was the suit’s cooling system. It pumped two-thirds of the oxygen they breathe through a special vent. This vented oxygen helps keep their temperature down, but it can also make them feel very cold when outside in space.
