Led by renowned Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien, In the Golden Age of Chinese Craftsmanship showcases the extraordinary precision and artistry of Chinese craftsmen from the Ming and Ch’ing dynasties through masterpieces in the National Palace Museum collection.

Using his signature contemplative narrative style, Hou structures the film into four sections — T’ang Ying, Curio Boxes, Orchard Workshop, and Departure Herald and Return Clearing — each illuminating a distinct facet of craftsmanship and the artistic spirit that defined these eras.

Through poetic imagery and thoughtful storytelling, the film reveals the timeless brilliance, discipline, and creative devotion of the artisans who shaped one of the most refined traditions of material culture in Chinese history.
