3I/ATLAS is an interstellar object that came from beyond our solar system and is now traveling through it. Right now, it is about 360 million kilometers from Earth and 600 million kilometers from the Sun. As it moves closer to the Sun, while Earth is simultaneously moving away from it, the comet has already slipped out of view for telescopes on Earth. Gradually, 3I/ATLAS is hiding behind the Sun, and whatever it does during this time will remain a mystery for us. It’s expected that 3I/ATLAS will re-appear on the other side of the Sun in early December 2025, at which point we’ll once again be able to observe it more closely from Earth and space. But before it disappears from our view, it has already done something unexpected. New observations and images have revealed behaviors and characteristics that are quite unusual. This object appears to be creating a very unusual environment around itself, which seems to act like a shield against the intense solar radiation and solar wind as it moves closer to the Sun. Scientists say they have never observed anything like this in any comet before.
