This video is your complete guide to graphite and charcoal fundamentals, designed for beginners! This lesson is specifically designed to help you understand the core principles, transforming your sketches from flat marks and shapes into dynamic, three-dimensional forms. Allow me to break down the often-confusing topic of graphite pencil grades, charcoal types, and much more.

H-Grade: Hard graphite (e.g., 4H, 2H) contains more binder in the core and creates light, subtle marks, perfect for technical sketching, initial outlines, and delicate details. B-Grade: Bold graphite (e.g., 4B, 9B) contains less binder, producing darker marks which are ideal for shading, building up values and achieving darker values in your drawing. The HB pencil is in-between both H & B making it the best versatile all-rounder, excellent for general use.

Charcoal on the other hand is superior for deep black values and bold expression. Vine Charcoal is pure, non-binding charcoal that is generally easily erasable and produces softer marks, making it a popular choice for initial compositional sketching. Compressed Charcoal on the other hand is made with a binder to keep its shame, also coming in pencil form for maximum control. This offers the deepest black values and boldest lines, perfect to pair with graphite for a strong contrast and sense of depth.
