China’s Laser Weapons Turn Into Desert Trash — Saudi Arabia Is Furious After Being Fooled Again
"For years, Chinese state media proudly promoted a new-generation laser air-defense weapon called “Tian Shield.” It was portrayed as a revolutionary “drone killer,” the symbol of future warfare. Major buyers in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, were convinced. They spent large sums to bring the system home and positioned it around vital oil facilities.
However, reports from the Saudi front lines soon told a very different story. According to a Saudi officer quoted by The Fan Blog, the much-publicized Tian Shield system could only destroy a drone after maintaining laser contact for 15 to 30 minutes. In a real battle, such performance is almost meaningless.
