Elon Musk exposed the Truth on Starship New Heatshield's Big Issue!
It has no doubt that SpaceX Starship had an impressive performance in Flight 10 in late August. For the first time, this version 2 completed all major test objectives and marked Starship’s first successful splashdown since November.
But hold up, this mission wasn’t just a picture-perfect touchdown. The heat shield on S37 showed some seriously bizarre anomalies that have the space community buzzing. What’s with the mysterious orange glow? Is this a setback or a breakthrough for SpaceX?
Elon Musk has recently revealed the answer, and this will surprise you. Let's dive in today’s Techmap episode!

But when the dust settled, engineers noticed something weird on the heat shield. Instead of the usual pristine or slightly scorched tiles, there’s this massive orange patch covering the vehicle, especially from the payload bay downward. This wasn’t just a subtle tint; it was bold, in-your-face, and unlike anything we’ve seen on previous Starship flights. Oh, and there was a small fire near the aft flap’s base before re-entry, but that’s not the main culprit. So, what’s going on here?
Elon Musk wasted no time jumping on X on August 28 to clear things up. First, he dropped some exciting news: the heat shield tiles on S37 “almost entirely stayed attached.” In plain words, they held on tight even as the spacecraft endured the brutal, fiery plunge back through Earth’s atmosphere.
Next, he explained the unusual colors seen on the ship. The red patches? Those came from metallic test tiles that oxidized, basically, the spaceflight version of rust forming when metal meets extreme heat and air. In another tweet, he confirms that the visible metal patch on Starship's heat shield oxidizes rapidly at Mach 25 (approximately 30,000 km/h). The white spots, on the other hand, were areas where SpaceX intentionally removed tiles to test how the insulation underneath performed.

His note was optimistic: the “latest upgrades are looking good.” That means SpaceX improved the heat shield, and it passed the test!
Okay, now let's analyze it step by step:
Holding onto those tiles during reentry is a major victory for SpaceX, demonstrating the engineering team has clearly strengthened its attachment system. Particularly, they have largely switched from glue to mechanical pins. The pins provide a more robust mechanical lock, reducing the risk of tiles loosening under the extreme vibrations, accelerations, and thermal stresses of launch and re-entry. They also added an ablative sublayer directly under the primary ceramic tiles. The sublayer acts as a ""safety net,"" charring and sacrificing itself to protect the hull if tiles detach or fail. The titles themselves are upgraded significantly, incorporating new fabrication techniques, coatings, and attachment methods. This includes testing metallic tiles in select areas for better durability, as well as active cooling systems to manage heat without relying solely on passive tiles. Forward flaps were redesigned, reduced in size, shifted toward the nose, and better shielded to minimize tile exposure to re-entry heating.
