What SpaceX just did with Starship Flight 10 Heat Shield Shocked NASA Scientists...Never Seen Before
“What we're trying to achieve here with Starship is to have a heat shield that can be flown immediately. So um the ship both the ship and the booster would be caught by the tower arms.”
During the countdown to Flight 10, Elon Musk confirmed that SpaceX was using this mission to test a new approach for Starship’s heat shield, aiming to prove its durability while deliberately removing a few ceramic tiles to push the ship’s limits. However, that very test almost backfired, putting Ship 37 in real danger, the opposite of what the experiment was meant to achieve.
So, what exactly went wrong? Could SpaceX’s heat shield solution have a problem?
Let’s dive into today’s episode of Alpha Tech.

Until now, we can be confident, and even proud, that the world’s largest rocket, Starship, has successfully completed many of the key objectives SpaceX set for Flight 10. From deploying satellites, to performing an engine burn in space, to reentering Earth’s atmosphere safely, all of it was accomplished thanks to the precise planning of SpaceX’s top rocket engineers.
But alongside these major milestones, Elon Musk also confirmed that the company was running a series of heat shield experiments with three main goals. First, SpaceX installed a few metallic heat shield tiles to test whether this material could protect Starship during the extreme conditions of reentry, while also allowing the vehicle to be quickly reused without needing extensive repairs or replacements.

Second, they deliberately removed some ceramic heat shield tiles in a few critical areas to test the resilience of the backup thermal protection system and the ship’s underlying structure, simulating what might happen if Starship were struck by a micrometeorite and lost some tiles.
And third, SpaceX added over 50 new ceramic tiles directly on the aft flaps, on the leeward side of the vehicle. The purpose of this test wasn’t clear, since that area doesn’t directly face atmospheric heating, but one thing is clear: this third experiment didn’t go as planned.
