Sir Frank Bernard Dicksee was born into a world of art, his very existence seemingly destined to be entwined with the brush and canvas. Born in London on November 27, 1853, he grew up in a home where creativity was encouraged and expected. His father, Thomas Dicksee, was a painter, as were his siblings, Margaret and Herbert. Art ran in their blood, shaping young Frank’s future before he had even picked up his first brush.
From an early age, Frank showed a talent that could not be ignored. He entered the Royal Academy Schools, where he quickly distinguished himself. His stories —of love and loss, of chivalry and passion, of heroes and doomed lovers frozen in their most poignant moments.
His art, deeply rooted in the ideals of beauty and romance, was embraced by the Victorian elite. Commissions flooded in, and soon his reputation as both a historical painter and a portraitist of high society was firmly established.
