The Taipei Confucius Temple, with nearly a century of history, is a replica of an ancient palace in the Quanzhou style. It enshrines the great sage Confucius and sages of past dynasties. It is also a frequent venue for performances of the Nanguan (Chinese opera) style. Hailed as a "living fossil," the Nanguan, also known as Nanyin, retains the performance techniques and aesthetics of the Tang Dynasty. This movement adheres to the Quanzhou Nanguan style and its polyphonic principles. The melody was first composed in gong ㄨ (ㄘㄟ) notation (Nanguan Gongche notation), then translated into five-line notation and orchestrated. This ancient and solemn piece depicts the solemn and dignified annual Confucius Memorial Ceremony, while the erhu's artificial harmonic passages praise the noble Confucian ideals.
