Visiting Lieyu, or Little Kinmen in the Kinmen island group is a great day trip. You could stay overnight if you wanted to nd give yourself more time. But in reality, you can see all of Little Kinmen’s main sites in just one day.

Little Kinmen is particularly interesting for the fact that its the closest you can get to mainland China throughout the whole of Taiwan. With Xiamen city just 10 kilometres away, you can see the buildings clearly visible on a clear day. 

So, Little Kinmen, Lieyu, or Lesser Kinmen - why all the names? Actually, Lesser Kinmen and Little Kinmen both come from the Chinese translation 小金門 which literally means ‘Little Kinmen’. (As it is smaller in size to the larger Kinmen next-door). 

Lieyu, on the other hand, is actually the rural township. Within this rural township are three islands; Little Kinmen (or Lesser Kinmen), Dadan, and Erdan. 
Lieyu; originally one island, Lieyu was split-off (裂 lie) from Kinmen Island, hence the name.

Although visiting Little Kinmen isn’t worth the trip in itself all the way from mainland Taiwan, or mainland China for that matter, if you are visiting Kinmen it is a sin not to visit Kinmen’s little brother, Little Kinmen! It’s well worth the short trip over, and now there’s literally a bridge you can walk over (completed in October 2022), you have little reason to NOT visit Little Kinmen. 

Little Kinmen may be small, but it’s an island packed full of history and culture. Let’s take a look at an introduction to Little Kinmen, what you can do in Lieyu, and why you should visit!
