In February 2024, Elon Musk, the guy who literally builds rockets for fun and launches satellites like he’s playing Space Monopoly, posted something on X that raised a few eyebrows.
“Russia is tragically weak in space for a once proud space superpower.”
Oof. That’s a brutal reality check. Especially considering that at the same time, US officials were warning the world that Russia might be testing space weapons. Yep, like Star Wars, but not the fun kind.
Apparently, the US Department of Defense believed Russia was working on space-based kinetic anti-satellite weapons, basically, stuff that could smash American satellites to bits. That’s kind of terrifying when you remember satellites are how we get GPS, weather forecasts, satellite TV, and even keep our phones working properly.

Politicians called it a “serious threat.” Some even connected it to the push for more aid to Ukraine. So, classic Washington: fear meets funding.
But then along comes Elon Musk, throwing cold rocket fuel on the fire. According to him, Russia’s space program isn’t exactly in fighting shape. In fact, it’s tragically weak. And if anyone would know, it’s the guy running SpaceX, the company launching satellites like they're popcorn kernels.
