China in Chaos: Earthquakes and Mega Floods Rock Shanxi, Beijing, and Inner Mongolia

"Since the beginning of 2025, various natural events and challenges have continued to impact different parts of mainland China. From heatwaves and droughts to earthquakes, typhoons, and heavy rainfall, many regions have faced ongoing environmental stress.

On July 25, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake occurred in Xiangfen County, Linfen City, Shanxi Province. The tremors were felt in nearby cities including Linfen, Taiyuan, and Yuncheng. Residents in surrounding areas such as Luoyang and Sanmenxia (Henan), as well as Xi’an and Weinan (Shaanxi), also reported noticeable shaking.

The epicenter was located about 16 kilometers from Xiangfen County and 35 kilometers from Linfen. Villages like Chenggong, and towns including Mayi and Tongzhen—within a 20-kilometer radius—were among the affected areas. The earthquake lasted for roughly 10 seconds, and many residents across Shanxi, Henan, and Shaanxi provinces shared their experiences of the shaking.
