In recent years, the Nemuro Strait, off the coast of Hokkaido, has become a regular observation site for orcas, the largest members of the dolphin family. Males can measure up to 9 meters long and weigh 9 tonnes, with no known natural predators. Found in almost all oceans, orcas are particularly abundant in the waters of Antarctica. The Nemuro Strait is, however, unique in Asia: it is the only place where they are the subject of real ecotourism with frequent sightings. A very social species, the orca is one of the rare animals to transmit cultural knowledge between generations, whether it be hunting techniques or vocalizations specific to each family group.
