Why Did the Taliban Change Their Mind About Buddha ?
In 2001, the Islamist movement Taliban, which had seized power in Afghanistan a few years earlier, destroyed two giant Buddha statues carved into the cliffs of the Bamiyan Valley. Having returned to power more than 20 years later, the Taliban have radically changed their stance toward ancient monuments — they now view the valley as a potential source of income and plan to turn it into a tourist attraction. This is a look at the current state of the Bamiyan Valley, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
On March 26, 2001, Taliban representatives for the first time showed journalists the aftermath of the attack on the giant Buddha statues in the Bamiyan Valley, which had been carved into the rock at the beginning of the new era. The Taliban completely destroyed these unique monuments, despite appeals from the entire civilized world to save them.
On February 26, Taliban leader Mullah Omar ordered his troops to demolish the two giant Buddha statues.
