Beginner Ballet Lesson 22: Soutenu, Chaine, & Pique Turns | Free Beginner Ballet Class Center Lesson

May 14, 2025

Welcome to Lesson 22 of our free online beginner ballet class! In this class, we're stepping into the center to explore the art of turns. We'll be covering the graceful Soutenu, intricate Chaînés, and spritely Piqué Turns.

Soutenu, pronounced soo-tuh-NOO, translates to "sustained or supported" in French. This turn is executed in sus-sous/fifth position, finishing with the opposite foot in front (in demi-pointe or en pointe). It's all about poise and control.

Chaînés, pronounced shah-NAY, meaning "chains or links" in French, involves a series of small, rapid, continuous turns while traveling along a straight or circular pathway (in demi-pointe or en pointe). This movement demands precision and balance.

The Piqué Turn, pronounced pee-KAY turn, is a "pricked turn" in French. This turn requires stepping directly onto demi-pointe or pointe with one foot and then turning. You can perform it en dedans (inward) or en dehors (outward) with the working leg typically in a Sur le Cou de Pied or passe.

Join us for this dynamic class set to beautiful piano music as we dive into these turns. It's an essential part of your ballet journey, whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your technique.
