Our Essential Identity
Is our being defined, or limited, by our identity? Should we aim to rid ourselves of the roles we identify with? And, if there is such a thing, what would be our essential self, our true identity?
Rupert says: ‘What’s important is to know that your identity doesn’t define who you are. You’re not trying to reach a state where you no longer have an identity. You’re trying to reach your being now and to recognize that you are the pure “I am”.
‘It’s not the role we play that matters, it’s what we identify ourselves with. All we are identical to is being. But, if you’re a mother, it’s appropriate that you assume the role of a mother. Being a mother doesn’t define who you essentially are, but understanding that doesn’t prevent you from being one.’
