FAA just Declared SpaceX to Land Starship on Droneship Shocked NASA Scientist...
SpaceX never stops pushing the boundaries of what's possible. Ten years ago, they stunned the world by landing a Falcon 9 rocket vertically on a drone ship in the ocean. Now, they’re aiming even higher with their next-generation rocket, Starship.
That’s right! SpaceX has an ambitious plan to recover its massive Starship vehicle from the ocean.
Well, this isn’t a joke! It was even confirmed by the FAA in a public report released to the general public.
But how exactly do they plan to do it? What are the potential benefits? And what challenges will they need to overcome to make this a reality?
Let’s find out in today’s episode of Alpha Tech.

Just yesterday, the FAA the agency responsible for overseeing rocket launches in U.S. airspace issued its final Programmatic Environmental Assessment (PEA) for SpaceX’s Starship/Super Heavy vehicle at the company’s Boca Chica launch site in Cameron County, Texas.
Alongside several favorable authorizations for Starship launches, the FAA also made it explicitly clear in its report that:
“For ocean landings, Super Heavy would land on a droneship or continue to be expended” and “Starship could land on a droneship (floating platform) or be expended.”

This means that Mechazilla is clearly not the only recovery method SpaceX can opt for. The company will definitely have a sea-based landing platform and none other than a droneship.
Since 2021, when Starship first emerged, Elon Musk and SpaceX have been envisioning bold plans to land the Super Heavy booster and Starship upper stage on an offshore platform in the open ocean.
However, for a time, this method seemed less viable due to the arrival of the Mechazilla tower equipped with its unique "chopstick" arms capable of catching and landing rockets in a radically different way.
But recently, we've seen the idea of ocean landings resurface, especially with the renewed interest in using autonomous drone ships to recover the massive Starship vehicle.
