Johann Sebastian Bach composed the hymn "Come, Sweet Death" in 1736 as part of a songbook edited by the church musician Georg Christian Schemelli. This collection included 69 sacred hymns and several other melodies. Among these pieces stands one with a distinctive melody and unique character—the piece known as "Come, Sweet Death."

For this hymn, Bach used words by an unknown poet, written around 1724. In it, the poet pleads for death to come quickly and peacefully to lead them to heaven, where they can behold the face of Christ. The hymn’s text reads:
