"In the Steppes of Central Asia" is a symphonic poem (a single-movement piece of music inspired by a title that explains the music and is derived from a non-musical subject like a painting or a natural scene) composed by the Russian composer Alexander Borodin in 1880. It was dedicated to the memory of the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt.
The piece was originally intended to celebrate the reign of Emperor Alexander II of Russia, who had done much to expand Russia eastward. However, this did not happen. Nevertheless, the work has become a favorite for performance in concerts since its premiere on April 8, 1880, in Saint Petersburg under the direction of Rimsky-Korsakov.
This work depicts the interaction between Russians and Asians in the lands of the Caucasus steppes. A caravan travels through the desert under the protection of Russian forces. The opening theme represents the Russians, followed by a series of ornate oriental melodies played by the English horn, representing the Asians. Eventually, the melodies merge. Borodin thus depicts the interaction between the two peoples through travel, with the strings imitating the sounds of horses' hooves and camels' feet by plucking their strings. In the end, only the melody representing the Russians can be heard.
Borodin wrote a program note explaining the idea of the work through the following description: “In the deep silence that envelops the steppes of Central Asia, an unfamiliar sound of the peaceful Russian song is heard. From afar, we hear the sounds of horses' hooves and camels' feet as they move, and the sound of an oriental melody filled with sadness and longing. The caravan approaches, accompanied by Russian soldiers. It travels peacefully on its long journey through the vast desert. Then it slowly disappears into the heart of the desert. The Russian and Asian melodies merge in a common harmony. Then they disappear completely as the caravan fades into the distant horizon."
