What is "damit" in German?
"damit" is a subordinating conjunction used in final clauses (FinalsƤtze) to express purpose. It is similar to "so that" in English and connects two clauses where the second clause explains the purpose of the first.
Example:
ā”ļø Ich erklƤre die Grammatik, damit ihr sie besser versteht.
(I explain the grammar so that you understand it better.)
When to Use "damit" in German?
You should use "damit" when:
ā The subjects of the two clauses are different
ā You want to explain why an action is done
ā The sentence expresses a goal or purpose
ā Incorrect: Ich lerne jeden Tag, damit ich besser sprechen kann.

Correct: Ich lerne jeden Tag, um besser sprechen zu kƶnnen.
("um ... zu" is used when the subject is the same in both clauses!)
