Pi-late as-sem-bled the chief priests, the rul-er and the peo-ple.
Then said to them,
“You have brought this Man to me,
As one who per-verts the peo-ple.
And in-deed, hav-ing ex-am-ined Him in your pres-ence,
I have found no fault in this Man,
Con-cern-ing those things of which you ac-cuse Him.
No, nei-ther did Her-od,
For he sent Him back to me.
Be-hold, noth-ing de-ser-ving death has been done by Him,
I will there-fore chas-tise Him and re-lease Him.”
And they all cried out at once, say-ing,
“A-way with this Man,
And re-lease to us Ba-rab-bas.”
Pi-late, wish-ing to re-lease Je-sus,
A-gain called out to them.
But they shout-ed, say-ing,
“Cru-ci-fy Him, cru-ci-fy Him!”
Then he said to them the third time,
“Why, what e-vil has He done?
I have found no rea-son for death in Him.
I will there-fore chas-tise Him and let Him go.”
But they were in-sis-tent,
De-mand-ing with loud voic-es that He be cru-ci-fied.
And Pi-late gave in to their shout-ing.
So he gave sen-tence that their de-mand should be grant-ed.
And he re-leased to them Ba-rab-bas,
But he de-liv-ered Je-sus to their will.
