Scientists Discovers 600-Year-Old “Frozen in Time” Lost City in Mexico

The discovery of Guiengola, a 15th-century Zapotec city in Oaxaca, Mexico, has revolutionized our understanding of the region's history. Once thought to be a military outpost, it’s now revealed as a vast, organized urban center covering 360 hectares, with over 1,100 buildings, defensive walls, roads, and plazas. Led by Pedro Celis, research utilizing lidar technology uncovered the city's structure and revealed a complex, egalitarian society. Guiengola’s preservation offers a rare glimpse into pre-Hispanic urban life, challenging previous assumptions about Zapotec civilization. Further excavation may provide deeper insights into their governance, economy, and interactions with the Aztecs and Spanish.
