NBC 10 WJAR : Unfunded education mandates are fueling a fight in Rhode Island, as several school districts grapple with budget deficits.

The issue has made its way to the State House, where House Minority Leader Michael Chippendale is filing legislation (on behalf of the House Minority Caucus) that would allow districts to opt-out of certain unfunded mandates.

“Overregulation has created this dynamic where we are forcing districts to go with a contract that may not be in their best financial interest,” Chippendale said.
