The first BIGGEST conquest of Genghis Khan | How Mongol finally CRUSHED Jin Dynasty (Part 1). The Fall of the Jin Dynasty to the Mongols: From Arrogance to Disaster
After forcing the Western Xia kingdom to submit, Genghis Khan turned his attention to the Jin Dynasty. Once a dominant force in Asia, the Jin Dynasty, ruled by the Jurchen, was by the early 13th century a shadow of its former self. Corruption had spread through the administration, natural disasters like the Yellow River floods had devastated farmland, and ethnic tensions simmered between the ruling Jurchen elites and the Han Chinese population.

To make matters worse, a significant portion of the Jin army consisted of Khitan soldiers who were alienated and often on the verge of rebellion due to the discriminatory policies of their Jurchen overlords.
Between 1206 and 1208, while the Jin dynasty was preoccupied with its war against the Southern Song, Genghis Khan seized the opportunity to consolidate power and lay the foundation for the mighty Mongol Empire.
Historically, the relationship between the Great Jin and the Mongols had been far from harmonious. The Jin dynasty had employed a strategy of "divide and conquer" to keep the Mongol tribes fragmented. By exploiting tribal rivalries and encouraging disunity, the Jin ensured that no single power could challenge their dominance. Additionally, the Jin collected regular tribute from certain steppe tribes, reinforcing their economic and political control over the region.

These campaigns were brutal, aiming to suppress uprisings and maintain Jin supremacy on the steppe. Many Mongols were enslaved, killed, or otherwise subjugated during these operations. These harsh measures bred resentment and enmity among the nomadic tribes, planting seeds of resistance that Genghis Khan would later harness to unite his people.
In 1208, Wanyan Yongji ascended the Jin throne. His incompetence and cruelty only worsened the empire's woes. Desperate to assert his authority over external threats, Yongji demanded in 1210 that Genghis Khan acknowledge him as the rightful emperor of the Jin Dynasty. For Genghis Khan, this was not just an insult but a golden opportunity to justify his ambition for conquest. Publicly ridiculing Yongji, Genghis Khan declared that the Jin emperor was a coward unworthy of leadership, adding, “A true emperor descends from the heavens, like me.”
When word of this insult reached Wanyan Yongji, he reacted with fury, ordering the execution of Mongol envoys. This act violated one of Genghis Khan’s strictest laws: no harm was to come to ambassadors or envoys, regardless of circumstances. The killing of his envoys was seen as a grave insult and an unforgivable offense.
