Xenophon’s Education of Cyrus begins by describing the Persian Republic and its singular dedication to austere virtue. But its Cyrus, who was partly educated by his pleasure-seeking grandfather, sees a crucial weakness of his Persian homeland and exploits it as he builds for himself a vast and transnational empire. While educating good readers about the many daring and clever steps Cyrus must take to win and govern his empire, does Xenophon also direct his readers’ attention to questions that carry us beyond Cyrus’s political world and introduce us to philosophy? How?"
