Ludwig Rotter
(Viena, 6 September 1810 - Viena, 5 April 1895)
Austrian teacher, composer and organist. Following violin, piano, and organ lessons and working as a piano accompanist and teacher, by 1837 he became the organist at both the Jesuit Church Am Hof and the University Church (both in Vienna) under the Kapellmeister Joseph Drechsler. In 1845 he succeeded Drechsler as Kapellmeister until he was replaced by Cyrill Wolf at the University Church in 1864 and by Josef Böhm at the Church Am Hof in early 1877. In 1842, he took over a teaching post at the Society for the Promotion of Authentic Church Music at St. Anna (Vienna) as a substitute for the ailing Augustin Duck. Also there he taught organ in the following years until 1848 (among his students was Johann Ritter von Herbeck). In 1862, he became a regular, and in 1867 the first court organist (successor to Simon Sechter, who had been an expectant since 1858). He also was the titular deputy Kapellmeister of the Vienna Court Music Band from 1870 to 1877. As a composer, he mainly wrote sacred music, among them a Requiem, six masses, and dozens of graduals, offertories, et al. He also composed the stage work 'Der Genius der Genügsamkeit' (1837), overtures, chamber music and keyboard pieces. During his life, he was one of the most important and frequently performed Viennese church music composers of the 19th century.
