Alan Turing (1912–1954) was a British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, and pioneer in computer science. He is widely regarded as one of the fathers of modern computing and artificial intelligence. Turing is best known for his role in cracking the German Enigma code during World War II, an achievement that significantly contributed to the Allied victory. His conceptualization of the "Turing Machine," a theoretical device that manipulates symbols on a strip of tape according to a set of rules, laid the groundwork for modern computers. Turing also formulated the "Turing Test" as a criterion for machine intelligence, asking whether a machine could convincingly imitate human behavior. Despite his immense contributions, Turing faced persecution for his homosexuality, leading to his tragic death in 1954. Today, his legacy is honored as a visionary whose ideas revolutionized computation and whose life story highlights issues of justice and equality.
