"This enchanting portrait is by Gerald Leslie Brockhurst and is another highlight of our masterpiecefair display2023.

Painted in 1923, this painting was originally given the name  ‘Andromache’, after the Greek princess recorded in Homer’s ‘Iliad’ who lost every male member of her family to the Trojan War.

Brockhurst then later subtly adapted and renamed the painting ‘The War Widow’ for a contemporary 20th century audience.

He lengthened the sitter’s haircut to reflect trends of the day, enlarged her right sleeve and situated her within an atmospheric crepuscular landscape alluding to a promising dawn on the horizon.
