Lingyan Temple is located in Changqing District, Jinan City, Shandong Province, China, in the northwest of Mount Tai. It is now an important part of Mount Tai, a world natural and cultural heritage.
Lingyan Temple was first built in the Eastern Jin Dynasty and was rebuilt in the first year of Zhengxing of Emperor Xiaoming of the Northern Wei Dynasty. It reached its peak in the Tang Dynasty, with landscapes such as Pizhi Pagoda and Thousand Buddha Hall. Xuanzang of the Tang Dynasty once lived in the temple to translate scriptures. Emperors of all dynasties since Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty who went to Mount Tai to offer sacrifices to the gods also visited the temple.
Lingyan Temple has a long history and has been built for more than 1,600 years. In the Yongxing period of Fu Jian of the Former Qin Dynasty (357), "Zhu monk Langbu lived here and began to build dozens of monasteries."
The temple founded by Lang Gong flourished for less than a hundred years. In the seventh year of Taiping Zhenjun (446) of Emperor Taiwu of the Northern Wei Dynasty, the Buddhist catastrophe was destroyed and all the temples were destroyed. During the Zhengguang period (520-525) of Emperor Xiaoming of the Northern Wei Dynasty, Master Fading came here and rebuilt a temple on the shady side of Fangshan Mountain, named "Shenbao" (only the ruins remain in the south of Xiaosi Village), and later built another temple on the sunny side of Fangshan Mountain, named "Lingyan" (next to the Ganlu Spring in the northeast of the current temple site). The existing Lingyan Temple was built by the monk Hui Chong during the Zhenguan period (627-649) of the Tang Dynasty, but after several repairs in the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties, it is no longer the original building (mostly from the Song Dynasty). During the Jingde period (1004-1007) of Emperor Zhenzong of the Song Dynasty, Lingyan Temple was renamed "Jingde Lingyan Zen Temple". During the Jingyou period (1034-1038) of Emperor Renzong of the Song Dynasty, Elder Qionghuan (Dharma name Chongjing) expanded and rebuilt the Five Flower Hall (now in ruins). In the sixth year of Jiayou (1061), it was expanded again when the Thousand Buddha Hall was rebuilt. In the fourth year of Chenghua reign of Emperor Xianzong of the Ming Dynasty (1468), it was renamed "Imperially Bestowed Chongshan Zen Temple". During the Jiajing period of Emperor Shizong of the Ming Dynasty (1522-1566), it was renamed Lingyan Temple. By then, the scale of Lingyan Temple had become quite considerable.
