It was always obvious to me that the narrator of The Raven was actually dead. Edgar Allan Poe shows a tortured soul, trapped in limbo because of his refusal to forget his beloved. The Raven keeps calling, somewhat shaking and forcing the soul to react. An angel would have had white wings, but the raven, messenger of God or of the gods or maybe hell, is dark - because the soul perceives the "Nevermore" call as an evil torture.
The idea that the soul should be crossing over is perceived as evil since it opposes human love.

Edgar Allan Poe's poetic vision, intersecting Christianity and Greek mythology, seemed to have unveiled a profound secret about the afterlife.
