Synopsis:
In March 186, the brothers Johann, Josef, and Eduard Strauss traveled to the twin city of Pest-Buda on the banks of the Danube (which was only united to Budapest from the year 1872), to give joint concerts at the Redoute for charitable purposes. On this occasion, Johann Strauss (son) presented for the first time on March 16 a new quick polka titled "Éljen a Magyàr!", which he had dedicated to "The noble Hungarian nation." In this composition, the composer not only paid homage to his hosts with the title ("Es lebe der Ungar!") and dedication, but also used a quote from the "Ràkòczi March" at the end of the rapid work. In Hungary, the "Ràkòczi March" had played a role for a long time, much like the "Radetzky March," op. 228 by his father, did later in Austria. At that time, it was quite daring, but Strauss didn't care too much about that.
