A.D. 500: The fall of Rome shatters Western Europe into a mosaic of warring kingdoms. Out of this chaos, a new civilization begins to take shape.

This period—often called the Middle Ages—saw the rise of mighty castles, built for defense in a fractured world. Romanesque churches soon followed, with thick walls and rounded arches standing as symbols of faith and stability. By the 12th century, the Gothic style emerged, reaching toward the heavens with soaring spires, flying buttresses, and radiant stained glass.

As the centuries passed, cities grew, trade revived, and learning spread once again. Out of the shadows of the Dark Ages, Europe advanced—laying the foundations for the Renaissance, a rebirth of classical ideas that would transform the Western world.
