2022/06/07 Member Speaker Series: An Evening with the Arbornaut
Dr. Margaret “Meg” Lowman, known affectionately throughout the world as “Canopy Meg,” is a global pioneer in forest canopy ecology and one of the world’s foremost arbornauts (translation: treetop explorers) studying and exploring the vast forest canopies that makeup what she has termed the Earth’s “eighth continent.”
Named the “Real-Life Lorax” by National Geographic, Lowman's work focuses on exploring, researching, and conserving global forests, mentoring the next generation in sustainability and forest stewardship, and educating diverse audiences through storytelling.
Lowman will share her lifelong exploration of the world's treetops, also the subject of her recent memoir as one of the world's first arbornauts.
After over forty years and forty-six countries of canopy science and conservation, Canopymeg's adventures to design the canopy toolkit and her passion for inclusivity in field biology are highlights of this talk. She also gives hope for the future of our degraded forests by describing a program called Mission Green, her recent partnership with EO Wilson to save the 10 most endangered forests of the world.
