Disaster! The NASA's RS-25 Engine Problem...
Approximately $6 billion in cost increases and over 6 years in schedule delays!
Altogether, the four contracts for the rocket's booster and engine were initially projected to cost $7 billion over a span of 14 years, but are now projected to cost at least $13.1 billion over nearly 25 years.
Yeah, this is how much NASA will waste on the RS-25 engines, which were used decades ago on the Space Shuttle.
Remember NASA ever claimed that the use of heritage technologies from the Space Shuttle and Constellation Programs was expected to result in significant cost and schedule savings compared to developing new systems for the SLS?
This is definitely a Disaster!
Let's expose everything about this in today's episode of Alpha Tech:
The Space Launch System (SLS) mega rocket is intended to return humans to the moon as part of NASA's Artemis program but could end up jeopardizing the space agency’s lunar program as funds run low.
The office of NASA’s inspector general released its final report on May 25, auditing the space agency’s management of the contracts for the SLS rocket and its engines.
Terribly, the report found that NASA’s overall investment in its Artemis Moon program is projected to reach $93 billion from 2012 through 2025, of which the costs of SLS alone represent $23.8 billion spent through 2022. That’s $6 billion in cost increases for the rocket, in addition to six years in schedule delays above NASA’s original projections, the report stated. The inspector general performed its audit from February 2022 through April 2023.
