In this week's vlog I started off with an impromptu follow me around Lowes to look at some of their spring plants in their garden center. I am particularly interested in getting a rose garden going this year so I was happy to see some nice lush plants with lovely flowers.
Next up I did an update on how the green lacewings were helping for all natural pest control on my houseplants to get rid of mealybugs. Overall I think I was too late for lacewings to be effective to control the mealybug infestation on my plants. This made me resort to using neem oil to kill mealybugs and while that works I realized it would not be practical with an infestation of this magnitude. After spending some time discussing mealybug control through use of lacewings, ladybugs and mealybug destroyers ( Cryptolaemus montrouzieri ) I decided I am going to have to be more drastic and blast them off. I am also discussing the use of systemic insecticides and why or why not I would use them on my houseplants. Thus far these longtail mealybugs have been very resistant to systemic insecticides but I haven't tried imidacloprid yet. Luckily the mealybugs are sticking to my Areca Palms and Bird of Paradise and not on my other houseplants.
Finally I moved some of my cold hardy palms outside, my Windmill palms and my Mule palms and also gave them a quick pruning.
Lastly I did an update with my terrariums and took a large amount of cuttings from my pothos vines to propagate. I'm propagating leaf cuttings of the Manjula pothos and my Cebu Blue pothos. Pothos propagate easily from cuttings so using a terrarium to get them rooted should be easy. I also gave a quick look at how my nepenthes ( pitcher plants ) are growing indoors.
