The time has come to move all of my tropical plants and houseplants outside from my winter grow room! I waited a little longer to do this than most years because I wanted the trees to flush out their spring foliage so the plants could receive some shade and be better acclimated to the sun light. While moving the plants out I trimmed off dead foliage and gave prunings, then inspected for insect damage or infestations ( mostly for white fly, mealybugs, snails, stink bugs and spider mites ) to determine which plants needed spraying with neem oil or stronger pesticides. I ended up giving everything a spray with neem since some plants had some signs of white fly damage and the mealybug problem was extreme. With most of the plants I talked about how they did over winter, the plant care and growing conditions I provided and the steps I will take from those observations to improve their care next winter. The Alocasias did great being grown indoors as houseplants, but the second they were moved outside they through a fit and wilted, which is to be expected with them so i'm not shocked by it. The Borneo Giant Alocasia elephant ears just don't like being moved from what I have noticed, but the others like the Alocasia Lutea and Amazonica are fine.. except for the mealybugs, but the spray should handle that. With time I will have to spray again as more bugs work their way out from hiding, like we saw with ficus lyrata, ( fiddle leaf fig ) that had some surprise mealybugs on them. I did walk around a little towards the end and give some updates but not to the point of a plant tour. Soon I will do a tour of my plants. The Areca palms are already looking better and I think routine systemic and repotting should finally put an end to the mealybug problems. Next week my big palm trees arrive and it will be time to start to planting all of the lovely plants I have been showing in the hauls over the last few weeks. So excited! Let me know if I should do a video on repotting the Anthuriums please. :)
