In this video I am going over how to divide Alocasia elephant ears, how to plant Alocasia elephant ears and how to grow Alocasia elephant ear houseplants. Of all of my variegated plants, variegated houseplants, variegated tropical plants, variegated perennials, my Alocasia ' Okinawa Silver' is my favorite. This easy to grow houseplant has gorgeous variegated foliage and it produces new plants readily. After having this plant potted for a couple of years it was time to pull it out and divide it up. Alocasias are so easy to divide and propagate this way. As with many variegated plants, whether rare variegated plants or common, some of them have unstable variegation which is the case with this variegated elephant ear. I have pruned some back to encourage variegated growth but even if those stay green, they are still nice plants to have around. The Alocasia odoro, which is what the Okinawa silver is, are great tropical plants that also make a decent houseplant. ... with or without the variegation. Some of the foliage that pops out of this alocasia is so similar to the almost painted appearance of the variegated monstera borsigiana albo, but far more inexpensive and they grow so much faster than any variegated monstera.
