Charlemagne or Charles the Great (747 – 814), was the founder of the Carolingian Empire and best known for unifying Western Europe since the Roman Empire's destruction. He was the King of the Franks from 768, King of the Lombards from 774, and the first Emperor of the Romans from 800.

The ruler of the Kingdom of the Franks is often referred to as the "Father of Europe," and he is revered as an iconic figure in France and Germany. Until the twentieth century, European royal families claimed descent from him, and the Empire he established in Western and Central Europe lasted until 1806.

He continued the earlier work of Charles Martel in defending the west against invaders and Clovis in unifying France, and his court became the center of a renaissance of learning that ensured the survival of many classical Latin texts while also generating much that was new and distinctive.
