Johann Baptist Schiedermayr [Schiedermayer, Schiedermair]
(Münster, 23 June 1779 - Linz, 6 January 1840)

German composer. Son of Johann Georg Schiedermayr (c.1746-1811), he initially studied with his father before entering, in 1788, as a choir singer at Windberg Monastery. In 1791 he moved to the Benedictine abbey of Oberalteich where he received training from Ignaz Edmund Härtl and Stephan Fuchs. In 1793 he moved to Straubing, where he received classes from Thaddäus Wolfgang Freiherr von Dürnitz (1756-1807), and where in 1794 he began his career as organist and composer. In 1796 he moved to the Monastery of St. Nikola de Passau where he worked as organist at a time when he also studied theology at the Collegium academicum. Shortly afterwards he moved to Austria, where in February 1804 he settled in Linz as organist at the service of Franz Xaver Glöggl (1764-1839), the chapel master of the Cathedral of Linz. He soon gained some importance in the music scene and was hired as chapel master of the Landestheater, a position he held until 1837. In 1807 he married Barbara Eggerstorfer (1783-1858) with whom he had eight sons and three daughters. In 1839, and after the death of Franz Xaver Glöggl, he became Stadtpfarrkapellmeister. As a composer, he was remarkably prolific especially in religious music. His brothers Georg Schiedermayr and Franz Xaver Schiedermayr (1782-1833) were also organists and composers. Johann Baptist Schiedermayr died in Linz in January 1840. #ClassicalMusic
