Cutting Hardy Bananas & Gingers || Digging Cannas & Alocasia || Winter Protection || Saturday Vlog
Title says it all! We had a few warm days here in STL so I tried to make the most of it and started to get the cold hardy banana trees cut back for winter. I will put a couple feet of mulch on them soon. I also cut back the cold hardy gingers ( hedychium ) and cleaned up the garden bed where the hardy palm trees are. It looks so nice being able to see the Sabal minors without all of the brown gingers behind them! I then moved a couple more plants inside, the Bismarkia palm and Australian tree fern. Lastly I showed how to I dig and store cannas for winter, as well as the Alocasia that were planted near by. Overwintering Alocasia can be done a few ways, I do it the lazy way, just let them chill until it is warm again outside. How to protect cold hardy tropical plants during winter can be done a ton of different ways, I prefer to keep it simple, cut them back and use lots of mulch. I forgot to mention that it doesn't hurt to sprinkle some DE powder with the canna rhizomes when storing them for winter. Doing so helps keep pest from being able to chew on them. Unfortunately I cannot find a link for the outdoor fan, I think maybe it is one of those products sold out due to shipping issues overseas. It was made by NewAir and cost around $89 at time of purchase. I'm sure the price will have gone up, but maybe you can keep your eyes open and google, "NewAir Outdoor Pedestal Fan" from time to time and be able to find it.
